mRADAR – development of a contactless vital signs monitoring system

mRADAR is a contactless monitoring system developed by INNOKREA, designed to assess vital signs using mmWave radar technology. The technology is based on earlier research conducted by scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology and the Medical University of Gdańsk.

mRADAR is currently in the TRL4 → TRL5 development phase.

Challenge

Monitoring patients’ vital signs still relies largely on solutions that require direct contact with the body—such as electrodes, respiratory belts, or sensors worn by the patient. This means time-consuming preparation for the test, the use of disposable materials, and limited capabilities for long-term monitoring outside the hospital.

At the same time, cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, remain one of the greatest challenges facing modern healthcare. There are more than 64 million people worldwide living with heart failure, and changes in heart rate and breathing are often the first signs of deteriorating health. Early detection of such changes can reduce the number of hospitalizations and improve treatment outcomes.

The key challenge of the project was to develop a solution that would enable automatic, rapid, and completely contactless monitoring of vital signs with a level of accuracy suitable for use in clinical practice and home care

Solution

INNOKREA is developing mRADAR—an intelligent system that uses mmWave radar technology and artificial intelligence algorithms to monitor patients’ vital signs without physical contact. The system analyzes chest micro-movements associated with heart activity and breathing, eliminating the need for electrodes and other contact sensors. The data is automatically processed by signal analysis and pattern recognition algorithms, enabling the early detection of abnormalities.

The scope of work included, among other things:
• designing the architecture of a device using mmWave radar,
• developing AI algorithms for analyzing biological signals,
• implementing 12 analytical functions to support the assessment of a patient’s condition,
• automatic calibration that reduces exam setup time to less than one minute,
• development of a solution suitable for use in both medical facilities and at-home monitoring.

The project is being developed in accordance with research and development methodologies and is being prepared for the next stages of clinical validation and commercialization.

Business impact

The solution currently under development addresses the growing demand in the Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) and digital healthcare markets, which are experiencing rapid growth in Europe and worldwide.

The key business and operational benefits include:
• completely contactless monitoring of vital signs,
• a reduction in measurement setup time by more than 50%,
• elimination of single-use materials and reduction of operating costs,

Ultimately, mRADAR could be used in hospitals, intensive care units, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and home care settings. The business model involves partnering with medical systems integrators and RPM service providers under a Device as a Service (DaaS) model, which facilitates implementation without requiring healthcare facilities to incur high upfront costs.
